Jane Kavanagh: From YMCA Swimming Success to a Notre Dame Commitment

In the American college swimming landscape, every recruiting season brings different stories. Some athletes are pursued early, others only truly shine when they enter the university environment. Jane Kavanagh – a 17-year-old from Westfield, New Jersey – has just added her name to the roster of the Notre Dame women's swimming team, set to enroll in the fall of 2027. With her standout performance at the YMCA Short Course Nationals, Kavanagh is expected to be an important piece in the development strategy of head coach Mike Batore and assistant Trevor Mankiewicz. Kavanagh currently trains with the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA, where she delivered an impressive performance at the YMCA Short Course Nationals. She finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.86, just behind the winner. She also placed fourth in both the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.36) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.89). Her time of 50.44 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle good for tenth place. These numbers indicate a young athlete with a solid technical foundation, strong aerobic endurance, and versatility in switching between strokes. However, a full picture of Kavanagh's potential at the NCAA level requires looking at the larger context. At Summer Juniors, held in a long-course pool, her results were far less impressive. She ranked 102nd in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:25.64 and 130th in the 100-meter freestyle with 59.30. This discrepancy raises questions about her adaptation between short-course and long-course competition. Still, for a developing athlete, this could simply be a matter of race experience and confidence at major meets. According to recent ACC Championships data, to make the final in the 200-yard freestyle, an athlete needs to post roughly 1:46.88. Kavanagh's current best of 1:48.86 puts her within about two seconds. With two years of development remaining before college, this gap can be closed if she maintains her training intensity and makes appropriate adjustments. Notably, Kavanagh is not strong in just one event. Her high-level results across the 200 free, 200 back, and 200 IM demonstrate versatility. This gives her options on the team and allows the coaching staff to use her flexibly in relays. However, experts caution that trying to stay strong in too many events may prevent her from achieving the depth needed to compete at the NCAA level. Notre Dame is currently in a rebuilding phase after finishing 11th out of 15 teams at the 2026 ACC Championships with 366 points. The program is not among the elites, but that also means incoming freshmen will have more opportunities to compete for roster spots. Kavanagh, along with Eleanor Geraghty, Meghan Bluethmann, Maris Williams, and Sarah Paisley Owen, forms a large recruiting class, signaling a strategy to build team depth. Becky Rentz, a current sophomore at Notre Dame, posted a 1:46.16 in the 200-yard freestyle at ACC Championships and placed 19th. This is a meaningful benchmark for Kavanagh to aim for. If she can match or surpass Rentz's times over the next three years, she will become a key contributor in the middle distances. One major issue in Kavanagh's profile is the large difference between her short-course and long-course results. At Summer Juniors, she did not make the final and placed in the middle of the rankings. This might reflect her unfamiliarity with the long-course stroke technique or simply a lack of experience at elite-level meets. Notre Dame's coaching staff will need to address this when she arrives. Looking broadly, Kavanagh's recruitment is part of a trend where NCAA programs increasingly scout talent outside of the USA Swimming system. YMCA swimmers often possess solid technique but lack national-level race experience. With proper training and regular exposure to high-level competition, they can fully develop into NCAA-caliber athletes. For Jane Kavanagh, the road ahead is still long. Two more years before she steps onto a university campus are a valuable window to refine her skills and gain more racing experience. If she can maintain her current development trajectory and close the gap to ACC standards, Kavanagh could become not just a promising freshman but also a symbol of growth in women's swimming from community-based programs.
