Worlds 2026 Play-In: New Bo5 Format, Only One Spot — MVK and the Historical Test

On August 31, Riot Games announced the new Worlds 2026 Play-In format. Four teams will compete in a double-elimination bracket, all matches are Bo5, and only one team advances to the Main Stage. LPL and LCK are excluded, and this is a major shift from 2026 when the Play-In was between the LPL and LCK fourth seeds. The four participants are the LEC third seed, the LCS third seed, the CBLoL second seed, and the LCP third seed, MVK Esports. MVK earned their spot through a dramatic lower-bracket run in the LCP playoffs: they lost the opening match, beat GAM 3-2 in the lower bracket, and then lost 1-3 to CFO in the final. This is MVK's first Worlds appearance, and their roster includes Kratos, Gury, Chika, Harky, and SiuLoong, under head coach Eucliwood. The new format heavily emphasizes champion pool depth and Bo5 endurance. Because only one out of four teams advances, every series is crucial. MVK lack international experience and superstar talent. Yet their resilience in lower-bracket games could prove useful. They might use their underdog status to create chaos and surprise stronger teams. However, facing LEC and LCS teams with deeper tactical resources and stronger individual players will be an uphill battle. The qualification window, stretching from September 19 to October 10, also creates uneven preparation timelines. MVK qualified early, but their LCP season ended weeks before Worlds, which could cool their momentum or give them more time to study the tournament patch. The absence of LPL and LCK does not make the Play-In easier; it makes the field more balanced and unpredictable. MVK's best chance is to stay composed, drag games into their preferred chaotic style, and use the double-elimination safety net.
